International Realty & Development Corporation
Sherwin John Jacobs is an attorney and has been the president
of International Realty and Development Corporation (IRDC)
since its inception. With the purchase of the Wigmore Building
in 1977, Mr. Jacobs became actively involved with the downtown
Roanoke redevelopment efforts. Mr. Jacobs, along with a small
group of local farmers and local market merchants, formed
the Roanoke Area Market Association (RAMA). He served on the
Board of Directors of this organization for a number of years
after its creation as well as a year as president and one
year as treasurer. RAMA was instrumental in bringing the Chili
Cookoff, the Strawberry Festival and the Dickens
of a Christmas events to the market. In addition to his
property development experience, Mr. Jacobs understand business,
having operated a retail store in the Wigmore Building from
1983 to 1992.
The Wigmore Building
The Wigmore Building is a two-story brick structure with
a steel reinforced framework, each floor having 7,125 available
square feet. In the early 1980s, the first floor fronts and
spaces were renovated to accommodate new retail stores and
restaurants, which were moving into the area. Since then the
Market Area has continued to expand. As the Market Area itself,
and Roanoke as a whole, have grown over the past few years,
the demand for professional space in a unique setting has
increased. IRDC is responding to those professional individuals,
who want a state-of-the-art work environment, both for themselves
and their clients, in the historic setting of the city Market
Area.
IRDC prides itself in providing just such a work environment
for the discriminating professional. In the present renovation
of the second floor, the entire area has been taken back to
the studs, underlayment and plastered walls. Five large offices
are being constructed, ranging in size from 768 square feet
to 1,250 square feet. The back offices as well as the interior
corridors have shielded skylights to allow the outside light
to permeate the building to create a pleasant atmosphere.
All office fronts have glass fronts to enable each office
to take full advantage of the natural light afforded by the
skylights. The restrooms have been designed with a combination
of tile, slate and granite, blending contemporary elements
within the framework of an historic setting.
